Tokyo Slo-Mode
I imagine Tokyo to be a tiny web of corridors supporting the endless movement of cars, trains, bodies and lights. Here, as in all cities, people experience urban fatigue, their initial shock of wonder at all there is to see waning because there’s so much to see all the time. This may be more pronounced in Tokyo, where the population density of 6 thousand people/sq. km dwarfs Manhattan’s 2.5 thousand human beings/sq. km.
In this video, Alex Lee remixes the senses. The city is reawakened as a playground where life moves in stop-motion, slow-motion, time-lapse and color filters for three ethereal minutes. By enhancing what our eyes can see, he brings out small moments of wonder: the flight of a flock of birds, the sleekness of a train, even tracing the eyes of a smiling elderly man to the paper lanterns entrancing him.
